New Year, New Toys

2019 is going to be a busy year. It started with getting the notification that my cyanotype (below) was accepted into Conroe Art League 4th National Invitational Show. It’s my local art league but it’s still my first national show so I’m excited.

I also got a Cricut Maker recently and I’ve been playing around with all the things it can do. Its ability to cut felt has by far been my favorite thing. My mind is racing with the possibilities. I’ve already decided to print my cyanotypes onto fabric at some point. The Cricut will help me cut them for various projects. Maybe some mixed media with cyanotypes and embroidery. That could be fun. You can see the pile of felt ready to go next to my machine.

Right before I got the Cricut I was cutting everything for various ornaments I made as gifts by hand. Ouch. I made 12 different ornaments this year and my scissor hand wasn’t happy about it. The 2 below are some custom ones I did. My brother-in-law loves the Halloween movies so I made him a Michael Myers. I was also a part of an ornament exchange so I whipped up the little Christmas tree. The ornaments on the tree are little seed beads.

The ornaments were so much fun I started working on more patterns. The world needs more Dolly Parton. I should have a finished sample soon.

The Cricut came in handy when I needed a birthday card. I’ll be using it to make some wedding congratulations cards and maybe sending Galentine cards to my friends.

But my first crafting love is felt so I quickly moved on to making felt flowers and succulents. I made the succulents to test the settings then moved on to making a bunch of different flowers. I used the flowers to make the door decoration. The flowers would have normally taken me days but I finished the whole thing in a couple of hours. And I was multitasking.

I also had it cut out this banner to help organize my growing pin collection. I obviously needed to make it bigger. Oops!

I have to say that this is a fun and useful new toy. It saves a ton of time (and my hands.) I look forward to coming up with new projects to make and share. Definitely be on the lookout for patterns in my Etsy store.

I’m still thinking of how to use it to bring together my craft projects and my art projects. Maybe make banners from my cyanotype image? Quilted pieces? Layers on an art collage? Who knows. That’s what’s so fun about making things.
